Unemployment Plagues Recent Vets

The Washington Post along with other media sources ran this story (Click here) about recent vets being unable to find work.  This story as well as many others implies that the military does not provide job skills applicable to the civilian market.

I disagree with this for two reasons.  First, the military does provide job skills but since so few people serve (1% of the population), potential employers are unable to translate military skills into civilian job skills.  Second, the military ensures that individuals have the most important skills for success: teamwork, accountability and discipline.   We need to recognize these skills as a society.
